Different shelves call for different crayons. Here is what teachers reach for most:
Crayola crayons: A longtime favorite for reliable color, smooth lay-down and consistent quality across the standard range.
Prang crayons: Rich, true-to-name colors with a slightly softer feel that's great for blending and layering.
Jumbo crayons: Built for small hands and enthusiastic grips, and tough enough to resist snapping.
Crayon cases: Keep colors sorted, protected and easy to grab between projects.
Crayons can be used for more than basic coloring sheets. A few project ideas include:
Crayon resist art: Color with crayons, then wash watercolor over the top for a magic-reveal effect.
Texture rubbings: Lay paper over leaves, coins or textured surfaces and rub to capture the pattern.
Diagram labeling: Color-code science illustrations and geography maps so the details pop.
Melted crayon projects: Shave or melt old crayons into new shapes and seasonal art.
Even with screens everywhere, crayons hold their ground. They build fine motor skills in young learners, sharpen color recognition and provide instant creative feedback with no batteries, screens or setup required. They also work across subjects, from labeling a science drawing to mapping a geography lesson to brightening up a writing assignment.
Because crayons are forgiving and easy to pick up, they are often a student's first taste of making art. This early confidence carries over into more advanced media as kids grow, which is why a well-stocked supply of crayons is one of the smartest, simplest investments a classroom can make.
